The Catholic Academic Exchange Service (KAAD) is a German Catholic Church scholarship institution for postgraduate students and scientists from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Neighborhood and the Middle East, as well as Eastern and Southeastern European (developing) countries. KAAD assists its scholars in the form of scholarships and educational programs and provides spiritual and personal support in the future because of the growing activities of students in their home countries. It is based on collaboration with partner committees and alumni associations in these countries and aims to establish a (scientific) network and contribute to comprehensive development, including religious and interfaith dimensions.
During the 1950s, when German Catholics opened themselves wide to the questions and concerns of the world church, especially Catholic public organizations, the opportunities created in the region by interacting with international students in Germany. Acknowledged Against this background, KAAD was formed in 1954 at the initiative of the Catholic Congress in Fulda. Four years later, it was formally registered as a non-profit organization in Bonn.
In Europe, Eastern European Scholarships are offered to students from the Middle East, Southeast and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.

Scholarships Types:
Scholarship Program 1 is intended for postgraduates and academics living in their home countries who have already gained professional experience and are interested in postgraduate education (or research establishment) in Germany. The program is organized by regional partner committees, and staffed by university professors and church representatives. Documents are usually submitted to the applicant’s home country committee.
In Scholarship Program 2, we sponsor top foreign students from developing countries who have already enrolled in a German university. Scholarship candidates must be nominated by the relevant campus ministry.
The Eastern-Europe program – also administered by regional partner committees – focuses primarily on short study or research stays in Germany. Generally, we expect applicants to be in their home countries when applying for KAAD through the Regional Partner Committee.
Eligibility Criteria for Eastern European Scholarships:
- Applicants must be from a qualified developing country in the following areas:
- Middle East
- Central Asia
- Eastern Europe
- Southeastern Europe
- Caucasian country
- Applicants must be fluent in German.
- Applicants must be Catholic Christians or belong to a Christian denomination.
- If applicants belong to another religion, they must make a recommendation to a Catholic partner.
- Applicants must have demonstrated commitment to interfaith dialogue/activities.
